Hopewell Elementary School
Southern Lehigh School District
Center Valley, PA
New Construction; LEED Gold Certified
This new elementary school replaced two existing schools in the Southern Lehigh School District. The 58,500 sq. ft., LEED Gold certified building houses 500 students in grades K-3. A highlight is its flexibility and accommodation of collaborative learning. This is best exemplified by two different collaboration zones, both containing a number of small group instruction rooms with movable partitions that can be easily reconfigured in multiple arrangements into larger group spaces. Another notable feature is the prominent location of the gym, cafeteria, and library in close proximity to the main entrance to enable secure after-hours use by the community. A number of sustainable strategies were instituted including a solar array to supplement the building’s energy supply and a geothermal HVAC system.
