Kutztown University Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center

Kutztown, PA

Conversion of Office Building into Cultural Center

The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University is a folklife museum and research center dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Pennsylvania German heritage. This project entailed the renovation and reconfiguration of an existing commercial building to serve as the new headquarters for the organization. In order to establish an inviting, exciting experience for staff and visitors, the remade facility includes gallery and exhibit areas, settings to accommodate meetings of different nature and size as well as independent study, an archive with materials accessibility for those undertaking historical or genealogical research, and storage space with humidity controls appropriate for sensitive materials. The architectural concept evokes Pennsylvania German vernacular and incorporates the materials and colors of regional stone barns.
