Spruance Library at the Mercer Museum

Doylestown, PA

Historic Renovation/Expansion

The Bucks County Historical Society commissioned KCBA to resolve major space and accessibility deficiencies at the Spruance Library of the Mercer Museum. The library is dedicated to the preservation of materials on early American technology and houses the personal archives of noted historian and archaeologist Henry Mercer. The challenge was to restore the existing library and incorporate an addition without upsetting the delicate fabric of the building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the construction of an archival vault, a handcrafted steel mezzanine was introduced into the existing two-story reading room to provide much needed space.
