Pool Reconstruction and Natatorium Renovation
Originally constructed in 1967, the Sheerr Pool at the University of Pennsylvania serves as the home of the university’s swimming and diving teams and hosts a range of campus recreational and fitness activities. After completion of a feasibility study that explored potential approaches to modernize the facility, KCBA was retained to serve as the architect for the project. The program included full reconstruction of the pool and aquatic equipment, renovation of the natatorium interior, and renovation of associated spaces such as the locker rooms and coaching suite.
The pool work included structural modifications to introduce an ADA entry as well as alterations to the shell and replacement of the moveable bulkhead to allow the pool to be configured as either one 50-meter competition course or separate 25-meter and 25-yard courses. New support amenities were also installed such as diving boards, starting blocks, and a timing system.
The natatorium interior was completely updated via a new pool deck, bleacher seating, paint, ceilings, and lighting. A new ADA-compliant viewing platform was also introduced at the bleachers, directly linked to the lobby. The locker rooms and coaching suite were similarly fully reimagined via new finishes and fixtures.
