Kutztown University Wells-Rapp Center for Mallet Percussion Research

Kutztown, PA

New Construction

This new building at Kutztown University serves as a center for education, research, training, and performances related to mallet percussion music instruments. The central programmatic element is a glass-encased, bi-level performance center that is linked to an exterior patio and flexible to accommodate performances of varying nature and audience size. Other spaces include dedicated practice rooms for marimba/vibraphone and xylophone as well as a music workshop, recording studio, reception areas, and exhibit rooms carefully configured to house and showcase the center’s collection of rare instruments. The configuration, massing, and materiality of the building were shaped by the objectives of achieving optimal acoustic performance and establishing a modern, inviting environment for students, performers, and patrons.
